Autumn 2019

With Christmas fast approaching, the return in September to Acorns from our summer holidays seems far away. How have we been spending time in the afternoons with your children?

September we had some good weather and we were able to use the school field once again now the building has been finished to the school. The children enjoyed playing football, netball, skipping and using a variety of outside equipment.

Painting had been requested by the children, so we explored faces and the expressions we make, free painting where the children used their imagination to produce artwork of their choice. We had alien visitors, some curious one-eyed aliens invaded the club!

The harvest festival was the theme for a competition. Vegetable and fruit boxes were on display for the children to see how many they could name. The children who named the most vegetables and fruit from the boxes received a prize.

The Jewish holiday Sukkot is linked to the Harvest festival by the gathering and storing of food. The children designed and built temporary shelters which are still built today. This religious holiday remembers the Israelites who spent time wandering in the desert on their way to the Promised Land.

October we talked about the Warminster carnival and carnivals around the World and the history of masks. The children designed and decorated masks to wear at this event.

November and evenings draw in, Bonfire Night was the theme. Guy Fawkes and the firework code to keep us safe was the topic of conversation. The children took to the kitchen to make bread stick chocolate sparklers and Catherine Wheel sandwiches, a lovely treat to take home.

Animals that come out at night are the theme with lots of projects using paper and card. There were flapping bats and frog models. The Japanese give frogs and the likeness of frogs to family and friends hoping for a return visit from them. Spiders and their webs were made and collages created with animals that are nocturnal.

December nearly Christmas and the children remember the Christmas story. Hand printed reindeer cards, beaded decorations and Christmas crafts galore.
